In this talk, Professor Pioré will reflect upon the political narrative that underpins autocratic attempts worldwide. He will also draw lessons from Mexico’s extraordinarily developed and highly commended electoral institutions, which, he will argue, counter-intuitively contributed to democratic backsliding.
Alejandro Poiré is a Distinguished Professor of Government and Public Transformation at Tecnológico de Monterrey, where he has been a Vicepresident and Dean. He is currently a Visiting Research Scholar at the Chicago Center on Democracy at the University of Chicago, and has been a faculty member at Stanford and Harvard. In public service, among other positions, he was Mexico’s Secretary of Governance, and was also part of the Executive Board of Mexico’s Federal Electoral Authority from 2003 to 2005.
